United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child1. A child means every human under 18 yrs, unless the laws of a country say differently.2. It applies to all children irrespective of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national, ethnic or social origin, property, disability, birth or other status. 3. In all actions concerning children, the best interests of the child shall be the first consideration. 4. It is the states' obligation to transfer these rights into reality. A state shall receive help from other countries if it does not have the resources to meet the demands of the convention. 5. The state must respect the role of parents in bringing up the child. 6. Every child has the right to life. 7. Every child has the right to a name, nationality, and as far as possible the right to know and be cared for by his/her parents. 8. Every child has the right to protection of his/her identity by the state. 9. Every child has the right to live with his/her parents unless incompatible with his/her best interests. The right, if desired, to maintain personal relations and direct contact with both parents, if separated from one or both. 10. The right to enter or leave his or her own country, and other countries for the purpose of reunion with parents, and to maintain a child-parent relationship. 11. The right to protection by the state if unlawfully taken or kept abroad by a parent. 12. The right to freely express an opinion in matters affecting him/her and to have that opinion taken into account. 13. The right to obtain and transmit information regardless of frontiers. 14. The right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. 15. The rights to freedom of association and to freedom of peaceful assembly. 16. The right to protection from arbitrary or unlawful interference with his or her privacy, family, home or correspondence, and from libel and slander. 17. The right to information and materials from a diversity of sources, and protection from harmful materials. 18. The right to benefit from facilities and services for the care of children and from facilities provided for parents/guardians to the state. 19. The right to protection from maltreatment by parents, legal guardians or any other person who has the care of the child. 20. The right to special protection and assistance if temporarily or permanently deprived of his or her family environment, with due regard to the child's ethnic, religious, cultural and linguistic background. 21. The right, in states which permit adoption, that it shall be in the best interests of the child. 22. The right, if a refugee, to special protection. 23. The right, if disabled to special care, education, training, health care services, rehabilitation services, and training, to help him/her enjoy a full life in conditions which promote dignity, self reliance and a full and active life in society. 24. The right to the highest attainable standard of health care. 25. The right to a periodic review if placed in care. 26. The right to benefit from social security. 27. The right to a standard of living adequate for mental, spiritual, moral and social development. 28.
