5. Satellite Images


A satellite took this image six hours after the synoptic map. The position of the LOW is clearly shown by the swirl of cloud centred over northern France. You can see the cold front clearly as a curving line of cloud that is now located in southern Spain. Over in the Atlantic you can see that the ocean has a 'speckled' look. This is due to the nature of the clouds. Where the clouds are thickest and continuous the area is seen as milky. However, in the Atlantic cold northerly air (from the poles) is being heated from below by the ocean and the result is small, isolated cumulus clouds (fluffy in appearance).
