6. Explain the significance in this passage of the way Victor was dressed when he went to school. Refer to the text in support of your answer. (Two points - about 50 words).
Note: Don't go beyond the lines provided!!
(1) Victor always wears a white starched collar to school. All the other children wear grey shirts. Victor's father was a "blue collar" worker, a working class immigrant. He wanted his son to be a "white collar", educated man. He dressed his son in accordance with the family's new status and aspirations. This isolated Victor. He felt embarrassed.
(2) Victor loves his parents. His home-made jumper is too tight but he would not hurt his mother by refusing to wear it. He knows the white collar is equally important to his father, so he does not question it.
FINAL NOTE
Practice makes perfect! Use the technique from now until June on both literary and journalistic passages. Always use your dictionary. Don't guess when you can be certain. In the exam, you will be depending on some of the vocabulary you have looked up!
